30 | Photographing Mushrooms: 16 - Xylaria hypoxylon // Candlestick fungus

Mushroom macros continue with the Xylaria hypoxylon otherwise known as either candlestick or candlesnuff fungus (see etymology for further reading). asexual (conidia) mushroom with a white tip that lacks a cap, but simply resembles a stick like appearance that inhibits a stroma (ascomycete), the spore bearing surface that blackens with age.


Cap: N/A. A stroma (highly visible; especially when aging)


Spores:

Bean shaped, smooth, 11-15 x 4-6µm. Asci - Typically 140 - 220 x 8µm, with eight spores per ascus.

Size/Height:


Season: Occurs throughout the year, although more so in autumn & winter (at least in UK) as this is when ascospores are produced & at which point the whole body turns black.


Habitat: Saprobic, on fallen branches and rotting stumps of broad-leaf trees; very occasionally on pine stumps.
